What makes this feeder squirrel proof? An ingenious weight-sensitive metal perforated sleeve or shroud that surrounds the seed reservoir slides down over the ports when a red or gray squirrel jumps onto the feeder, making the seed inaccessible. In addition to thwarting squirrels, you can adjust the feeder to help control heavier birds (think Blue Jay or Grackle).
There are two sizes of mesh that one may use inside the box, according to the size of the nut, seed, nugget or fruit you may want to use. The unique exterior metal shroud below the mesh serves as a tail prop and enables woodpeckers to easily access your seed. Woodpeckers use their tails as a “third leg” or prop! This feeder allows for great viewing of the entire bird.
When you put the Brome Squirrel Buster® Suet bird feeder out in your yard, squirrels cannot reach your suet, period.
When and if a squirrel jumps or climbs onto the feeder, the weight-sensitive outer sleeve drops down and completely shuts off access to the suet. Squirrels soon get discouraged and leave the feeder alone. When squirrels jump off the feeder, it goes back to functioning properly for birds.

Which birds does suet attract? Red-bellied, Downy, and Hairy Woodpeckers, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, Northern Flicker, Bluejay, Chickadee, Titmouse.
Occasionally Bluebirds will attempt to eat suet, but they have difficulty clinging to the feeder. Best to break some suet up for them and put it in a tray-type feeder.
